Retford’s 1st women’s barbarian match
Sunday 29/10/2023 East Retford hosted barbarian teams from across Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire in their first fully barbarian development fixture. women from east Retford RUFC, Wheatley hills warriors, amber valley tigers Gainsborough women’s and Doncaster demons all came together as one to become 2 teams. Team green and team pink. The plan for the day was to get some game time under the belt for so many new players, bringing hope to those that haven’t been able to get a game and to meet a whole host of like-minded people.
We started the day all 28 players warming up together while under the instruction of Brooke Rowland from Doncaster demons. Then we split off forwards and backs forwards been taken by Paul Barrett Ryan Warren and Carrie dean from east Retford and backs taken by Gareth Pilkington from amber valley then we joined together for our barbarian’s match 15min quarters refed at under 19s rules by Rob Jackson (NLD ref)
Team pink - Retford, Wheatley hills, amber valley and Gainsborough
Team green - Retford, Wheatley hills, amber valley and Doncaster
The game started slowly with a couple of mistakes which the ref talked us though as both teams were learning together, as time went on swapping players round positions and teams, everyone seemed to settle into a well fought game. The more experienced players held back and gave opportunities to the newer players to play their game under supervision and guidance. Great carries, fantastic off loads, amazing tackles, awesome tries and more importantly smiles for days!
From a coaches’ point of view this game was by far the highlight of the season so far. 5 clubs coming together as one for an amazing cause - rugby! Rugby is family based, from grassroots up, it was amazing to see all the training and hard work coming on to the pitch but also to see the amount of support for women’s rugby from locals, players, spectators, refs, coaches, first aiders, bar manager, Lynn, kids and the club.
I would like to give a massive shout out and thank you to everyone who came and helped on Sunday making the day a success.
The only thing we have to work out now is when we do it all again?!?
